If one of your resolutions every year is to become more environmentally friendly, it helps to take small steps to get there. One of the best ways to green up your house is to go green one room at a time. Maybe you’ve been doing small things like saving on water or starting a compost, but now you’re thinking about greening a whole room. And what better place to start than the bathroom! Here are 5 ways you can have a more environmentally-friendly bathroom.

Low-Flow Toilets: Toilets that use less water to flush away waste are not only great for conservation, they’re great for your budget, too. Did you know you could end up saving hundreds on your water bills? A few short-term dollars could end up saving you long-term dollars.

Fluorescent Bulbs: Fluorescent bulbs use 20%-40% less electricity than regular incandescent bulbs. They come in a variety of styles and wattages and can last up to ten times longer.

Aerators for Showerheads and Faucets: A very easy way to help cut down on water use is to install aerators for all your showerheads and faucets in your bathroom. Aerators can cut down on your water usage up to 50%. They add air to the water flow to make the water flow even. Aerators for faucets run under $10, but showerheads can run up to $50 depending on what kind of features you want.

Shower Curtains: Most shower curtains are plastic and made with PVCs that can have harmful long-term effects on your health. There are a ton of online retailers that source environmentally-friendly shower curtains that are made with organic materials which are also mold and mildew resistant.

Recycle Greywater: What is greywater? It’s the waste water left over from your laundry or the bath, and it’s easily recyclable. For instance, you can pretty easily use leftover bathwater for your toilet’s water tank. If you have a bigger budget and live in a bigger house, you can re-route the greywater to an outdoor yard or garden.
