In some ways, fish can be a more sustainable meat solution than poultry or livestock. The resources to farm produce fish are often sustainable and environmentally beneficial. However, getting the facts about your fish can be difficult. It’s well documented that not everything that is marketed as sustainable fish or wild caught fish is being honestly marketed. You’re going to have to do some work on your own if you want to be confident in your fish selections (and you’ll almost never have this benefit if you’re eating out, unfortunately). The good news is that there are some fantastic resources. The Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch® Buyer’s Guide is the most user-friendly way to keep track of what seafood is good and not good for you to purchase. The Blue Ocean Institute has a sustainable seafood program that you can refer to when making shopping choices. The Marine Stewardship Council allows you to track specific fisheries. Yes, it’s a little bit of work, but it’s worth it!
