Summer may be over, but if you’re the kind of person who likes to take care of your skin, it’s just as important during the fall and winter months. After all, you’re still going outside every day, and even days that seem long mean you’re going to need some TLC. Buying skin care products can be an expensive process – especially if you’re going the more organic route – so trying to make sure your skin looks healthy can take its toll on your budget. Not to mention the kinds of chemicals that go into your typical store-bought skin care products can actually harm your skin in the long run! So if you’re looking to make your own skin care products that can help you keep your budget in check, we’ve got some recipes that you can make at home.

Exfoliating Scrub

One of the best feelings in the morning or at night is to use an exfoliating scrub that you can utilize to massage your face while getting rid of dead skin cells. Your face feels and looks invigorated as well as being soft to the touch. But there’s an easy way to make an exfoliating scrub that works just as well (and probably smells better, too)! Here’s what you need:

  • Olive oil (other kinds of oil work just as well)
  • Kosher salt, ground coarsely
  • (Optional) An essential oil like lavender or jasmine for natural fragrance

First, you want to mix the salt and the oil together and until it’s the consistency of paste. (Make sure you’re careful about adding the olive oil slowly, because you can always add it in, but you can’t take it out!) You’ll know it’s the right consistency when you can rub it in between your fingers without it dripping into the bowl. Then you want to add a few (and only a few!) drops of essential oil for fragrance.

Shaving Bump Solution

While this solution may be better suited for the bikini line during the summer, this can also be used on faces and necks for men wanting to avoid annoying shaving bumps from ingrown hairs after their morning shave. Most solutions on the market that are made for reducing shaving bumps can be expensive and often use items easily found at your local grocery store, so why not make it yourself? Here are two ways to make it:

  • Shaving Bump Solution #1:
18 tablets of uncoated aspirin, crushed as fine as possible
    5 oz. rubbing alcohol
  • Shaving Bump Solution #2:
8 tablets of uncoated aspirin, crushed as fine as possible
    2.5 oz. witch hazel

In both of these recipes, just mix and you’re done! Make sure to store them in airtight containers and to shake them up before using them to unsettle the aspirin at the bottom. There’s a natural component in aspirin called salicylic acid that is useful in helping keep skin clear while reducing the inflammation of ingrown hairs.

Apple Facial Astringent

Chances are, if you’re the kind of person who washes their face regularly, you might use an astringent to help kill bacteria and clear your skin from extra oil that forms during the day. Vinegar is one of the best go-to ingredients for natural anti-bacterial products, and the added apple smell combines a little aromatherapy element. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1/2 cup of purified water
  • 1/3 cup of apple cider vinegar
  • (Optional) a few drops of essential oil or a squeeze of lemon juice to balance out the vinegar smell

It’s better if you refrigerate this particular concoction, so make sure you keep it in a clearly-marked container! Make sure you shake before using, and you can easily apply it with a cotton ball.
