Carl Sandberg was a great American writer who won an amazing three Pulitzer Prizes – one for a biography of Abraham Lincoln and two for his poetry. Last week we gave you a poem about the summer sun, and this week it’s about the summer moon, a poem called “Back Yard.”

Shine on, O moon of summer.
Shine to the leaves of grass, catalpa and oak,
All silver under your rain to-night.

An Italian boy is sending songs to you to-night from an accordion.
A Polish boy is out with his best girl; they marry next month;
to-night they are throwing you kisses.

An old man next door is dreaming over a sheen that sits in a
cherry tree in his back yard.

The clocks say I must go—I stay here sitting on the back porch drinking
white thoughts you rain down.

Shine on, O moon,
Shake out more and more silver changes.

Sometimes it’s good to just meditate on the moon and smile at the face we see every month. I just love the idea of raining silver on the world while simple people are inspired. When was the last time you sat in the moonlight for a moment? A few of us at Postconsumers can’t get enough of it, and we mean that in a very good way!
