This summer, when you’re thinking about your new project, or volunteer work, or anything else that you might be enjoying while you’re outside, don’t forget about staying responsible while having some fun in the sun! It’s easy to get caught up and the next thing you know you have a nasty sunburn. Be careful out there!

Stay hydrated

It’s a given out here in the desert to stay hydrated during the summer (well, almost all year round, really) – but sometime we forget to ramp up the H2O because we’re so busy. Make sure you keep some water handy all throughout the day, and keep sipping at it! Heat stroke is a serious threat. And don’t bother with Gatorade or other sports drinks – they contain sugar and salt that isn’t meant for hydration. Water up!

Stay covered

Sometimes I forget just how hot it is outside and I wear a black T-shirt. Five minutes later and I’m drenched in sweat. White reflects the sun, black absorbs it – so make sure you’re dressed appropriately. And if you can swing a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses, your scalp will thank you for it. And, of course, if you’re going to be out for awhile, the sunscreen is vital – there are lots of sustainable and effective sunblocks on the market.

Stay green

Not only should your sunscreen be environmentally less impactful, everything else should be, too! We always suggest the thrift store for finding summer clothes, including hats and shoes. Have any green activities lined up this summer? Join up with a group and plant some trees or help your neighbors start a community garden.

There’s so much to do this summer, so make sure you’re ready so you can enjoy all the summers yet to come!
