When we get caught up in busy lives surrounded by mixed messages, it can be difficult to take time out to appreciate the world around us. For those of us whose minds tend to go a million miles an hour, it can be very difficult to sit and meditate. But there’s a way to at least have a moment of mindfulness during the day, and it really only takes a minute.

In fact, you can do it during the first thing in the morning – while you’re taking a shower, just think about what good you can do for that day, even if it’s a small gesture like opening a door or letting someone go ahead of you in line. At breakfast, think about what healthy thing you can do for yourself every day, whether it’s something you’ll eat, or looking up an inspirational quote.

Or, alternately, you can be mindful at night – for me, the nights I can’t sleep, instead of counting sheep, I’ll make a mental list of all the positive things I have in my life. It helps so much more to focus on the positive! I find that making that mental list also helps inspire me to have better dreams and I wake up feeling good about my day and not so worried.

The best way to be mindful is to take in the moments as they’re happening any time of day or night. When I’m hanging out with my friends, I take a quiet mental moment and smile at the good time we’re having. (Sometimes I find it better than taking a picture!) The more often I do this, the more often I have moments when I think about how I love my friends and I’ll send them an email letting them know I was thinking about them – and everybody loves getting those emails, right?

Literally, it will only take you a minute, and the habit will stay with you for the rest of your life. I highly recommend it!
