If you’re already used to recycling and upcycling gifts, then you’ve probably got a crafty streak inside you. Maybe you’ve always been really good at making great gifts for friends and family, and need some more ideas. I like to make my own gifts sometimes – I find that I save money, and I put a little more personality into what I’m giving. So what can you make?

  • A mason jar filled with the dry ingredients for cookies or soup with a hand-written recipe attached
  • Dried flower sachets
  • Candle holders made from craft sticks and wax paper
  • Journal re-covered with old fabric or T-shirt
  • Fortune cookies
  • Homemade message board
  • Magnets made with photos and juice can lids
  • Change purse made from an old necktie
  • Homemade candles in sea shells
  • Poke holes in tin cans and put tea lights in them

Some of these are upcycling kinds of gifts, but you get the idea! Anything that will bring out your personality. Some of the best gifts I’ve gotten from friends and family were framed pictures, or a personalized journal or handmade jewelry. It always says to me that it was given in love, and that the person took the time and care to make something really cool.

There are so many gifts that can be homemade, and the Internet is a treasure trove of recipes and instructions for anything you have in mind. I have many friends who could use a cool journal with a cute little personalized cover!
