I was lucky enough to spend some time last year in Tibet, the home of the Dalai Lama, and I was able to see the palaces where the historical Dalai Lamas used to live. The beauty of the Buddhist artwork was absolutely inspirational, as was the kindness of the monks I met there. It was a magical place. Upon arriving home, I thought about the compassion and kindness of the current Dalai Lama, and how many inspirational words he’s said, even as he is in exile from his homeland. This quote of his I think is particularly great:

“Human happiness and human satisfaction must ultimately come from within oneself. It is wrong to expect some final satisfaction to come from money or from a computer.”

For the postconsumer, it’s a pretty obvious quote to us, because we know that satisfaction comes within ourselves to say, “I have enough for today!” We have the power to overcome the obsession with “stuff” and live a life that’s healthy for ourselves and the planet. We have the power within us to affect change, whether it be in our own world that we see every day, or the world at large.
